🌿 Ethical Photography: With Respect for Nature

  • Wild orchids are as protected as they are biologically delicate. To ensure these fragile colonies thrive for generations to come, our expeditions strictly prioritise a “leave no trace” philosophy.
  • Throughout the tour, Dr Nora de Angelli will personally guide you on specialised macro techniques that capture the plants flawlessly without picking, trampling, or altering their micro-habitats.
  • To protect these vulnerable populations from over-tourism and poaching, we maintain absolute discretion and do not publicly share or geotag the precise coordinates of fragile orchid colonies.
  • Our initial evening briefing fully covers this mandatory field etiquette alongside our primary technical instruction, ensuring your portfolio is built ethically and responsibly.

 Expected Species Checklist

Our departures are precisely timed to capture the unique succession of spring blooms across the region:

  • On April 27 – May 2 (Early Spring Pioneers):

Focus: Early forest and steppe specialists — featuring the Green-winged Orchid (Anacamptis morio & Anacamptis morio subsp. caucasica), early Orchis species such as the rare Monkey Orchid (Orchis simia), the Narrow-leaved Helleborine / Sword-leaved Helleborine (Cephalanthera longifolia) and Dobrogea’s iconic and majestic wild peonies, Romanian peony – Bujor românesc / Bujor de pădure (Paeonia peregrina).

  • On May 18 – May 23 (The Mid-Season Peak):

Focus: Peak spring diversity—including the Lady Orchid (Orchis purpurea), the rare, naturally formed intrageneric orchid hybrid Lady × Monkey orchid hybrid (or simply Lady-Monkey orchid), a rare hybrid between Orchis purpurea × Orchis simia, the Three-toothed Orchid (Neottinea tridentata), Violet Limodore (Limodorum abortivum), White Helleborine (Cephalanthera damasonium), Elegant Marsh Orchid (Anacamptis palustris subsp. elegans), the Greenish-white Butterfly-orchid (Platanthera chlorantha) and the earliest blooming marshland varieties.

  • On June 1 – June 6 (The Late-Bloomers & Delta Wetlands):

Focus: Late-season specialists—featuring the Pyramidal Orchid (Anacamptis pyramidalis & Anacamptis pyramidalis var. nivea – white flower variety), impressive specimens of the Rumelian Lizard Orchid (Himantoglossum calcaratum subsp. rumelicum), Red Helleborine (Cephalanthera rubra), the Broad-leaved Helleborine (Epipactis helleborine) and the rare endemics of Letea Forest, the elusive Danube Helleborine (Epipactis danubialis) and Gügel’s helleborine (Epipactis guegelii), framed by a spectacular bloom of white and yellow water lilies throughout the Delta canals.

Important note:

As your guides through the unique wilderness of Dobrogea and the Letea Forest, we always look forward to sharing the region’s rare botanical treasures with you. However, because nature follows its own rhythm, we can’t predict with absolute certainty which orchid species will be in full bloom during our exact tour dates; their flowering depends entirely on annual temperatures and seasonal rainfall. While we cannot guarantee perfectly optimal weather every year, we’re optimistic we will discover most of the beautiful species highlighted in our guide together.

What You Need to Bring

Camera & Macro Gear:

  • A DSLR or mirrorless camera
  • Dedicated macro lens (such as a 90mm or 105mm prime).
  • Macro lights, while in the forest can be quite dark
  • Short telephoto lenses (e.g., 70-200mm) are highly recommended for isolated landscape shots or opportunistic bird photography.
  • Bring a sturdy, field-ready tripod or monopod.

Field Wear/Clothing & Gear: Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with excellent ankle support for uneven steppe terrain and slippery wetland boardwalks. Layered, lightweight outdoor clothing is recommended to adapt easily to shifting early-morning and midday temperatures.

Physical Fitness: An active level of fitness. Guests should feel comfortable hiking for several hours daily while carrying their personal camera kit over uneven, wild ground.
